Ik staarde Jane aan. Dat mes van haar was gevaarlijk dicht bij me, en met ons samen geboeid, kon ik er niet echt vandoor. Op dat moment was het enige wat ik kon doen om mezelf te verdedigen Jane aan de praat te houden. En op dat moment kon ik maar aan één ding denken om over te praten.

De foto die was gebruikt voor Elva's vloek stoorde me nog steeds. Veronica had gezegd dat de talisman een significante emotionele betekenis moest hebben voor degene die de vloek uitsprak. Dat Jane die foto gebruikte, betekende dat ze er emotioneel aan gehecht was, en bovendien aan Elva.

Ik had lang gedacht dat ze volkomen onverschillig stond tegenover haar dochter, maar de foto van Jane en Elva had betekenis voor Jane.
