The police acted very quickly. They not only sealed off our school, but also took everyone to the police station to record detailed statements. In particular, those students who lived near the dormitory where the incident occurred were interrogated by the police.

As one of them, I was also taken to a separate interrogation room. Fortunately, the interrogation process was not as thrilling as in TV dramas, and the police did not yell at me.

Noticing my nervousness, the police gently reassured me, telling me not to worry and just to tell the truth. I nodded and told the police everything I knew, while resisting the urge to ask about the cause of their death. In my mind, I guessed that they might have been poisoned by carbon dioxide or alcohol. After all, it couldn't be that someone rushed into the dormitory and stabbed them to death.

After recording my statement, one of the relatively cool police officers walked out, while the other asked me to wait for a while and chat with me while he sorted out his notes.

The content of the small talk was nothing more than his curiosity about why I could resist the urge to gossip and not drag my roommate out to watch the fun.

I was speechless about his curiosity, "It was late at night and I was so sleepy. It was just someone celebrating his birthday in the middle of the night. What's there to gossip about? It's not like someone was arguing on the balcony in the middle of the night."

The policeman couldn't help but smirk after hearing what I said, and then asked me mischievously, "Well, if you knew that there would be a murder in their dormitory, would you have watched them for a little longer?"

I answered, "Maybe... At least we should warn them to avoid any accidents... But who knew this would happen at the time... I'm really curious if they were poisoned by carbon dioxide... The fire was really bright at night."

The policeman winked at me and laughed, "Haha, this question... is confidential."

" Good guy, so you were actually trying to trick me just now?!" I widened my eyes, watched him nod calmly, and immediately became furious.

However, before I could continue to complain, the grim-looking policeman came in with another classmate and motioned for me to leave.

With no other choice, I had to get up and leave.

I thought the matter was over and at most I would have to go to the police station to liaise with them. However, I didn’t expect that I would be summoned again the next day.

With doubts, I went to the police station again and walked into the familiar interrogation room.

" Lena , are you sure you saw a fire and people singing birthday songs in the dormitory opposite the night before yesterday?" The police confirmed with me again. I nodded affirmatively, not understanding why they had to confirm it again and again. You can't suspect that I set the fire just because I saw the fire, right?

"You said you were woken up at 1:40 in the morning, right?" they asked again.

"Yeah, one forty-four. I'm a bit superstitious, and I always avoid numbers like that. That night I was watching my phone, and I didn't get up to go to the balcony until the time reached one forty-five!" I nodded cautiously, and couldn't help but suspect that they were following me.

But it shouldn't be like that. Although it's a bit abnormal to celebrate a birthday in the early hours of the morning, a school is a place where students from all over the world gather, and there are a lot of people who run naked late at night. It's normal for me not to pay attention to something as trivial as celebrating a birthday in the dormitory late at night. So, they won't suspect me, right?

"What's wrong?" However, my answer did not get the result I wanted, in fact it was the opposite - they frowned and looked at me with scrutiny.

"Lena , let me tell you this, in all the confessions, you were the only one who heard the 244 singing, and you were the only one who saw the fire." The police's words startled me, and I shook my head subconsciously.

" Impossible! Their voices were so loud, how could I be the only one who heard it? Everyone should have some impression, right? How is it possible that I didn't hear anything at all?!"

"That's right. But we have confirmed repeatedly that no one heard the singing." The policeman shook his head and looked at me seriously.

"How is that possible? What about my roommates? They didn't hear it either? That can't be possible. I remember I turned over on the bunk above me, but I didn't get up." I continued to refute, anxious and annoyed.

"If there really was singing, you shouldn't be the only one who heard it. But after our questioning, we found that those students either didn't know what was going on, or were playing with their phones until dawn and didn't hear anything. Only you remember the time and details clearly..."

"What do you mean?" I asked nervously.

" Based on the current situation, you are highly suspected." The police's words shocked me.

"What's so big about it? Can I jump to the opposite dormitory and throw gas tanks at them?" I said self-deprecatingly with a wry smile.

"Yes, this assumption is not valid. However, you cannot prove that you were actually in the dormitory when the incident happened. You don't have an alibi." They continued to stare at me with cold faces.

"No, if I'm not in the dormitory, where else can I be? We check the dormitory at 10 o'clock, and the door downstairs will be locked after the check. Even if I'm not in the dormitory in the early morning, I can't leave the dormitory building! 244 is in Building 2, and I'm in Building 4!" I frowned and retorted with a bit of amusement.

" Lena , you are a little emotional now, please calm down. Let's talk about the facts, and I promise that you will not be wronged." The police comforted.

"Isn't this an injustice to me? What motive do I have? I don't even know who they are, but I was labeled a suspect for no reason! How can you expect me to stay calm?!" I asked in silence, thinking that this was really outrageous. I celebrated my birthday in the early morning and ended up suspecting someone from another dormitory building?

" Lena , there is one thing we can tell you. The victims were all killed by someone cutting their throats and bleeding to death indoors. It was not carbon dioxide poisoning as you think. So, do you understand the nature of this case?" The police patted my shoulder soothingly.

"..." I was speechless for a moment, and my mind went blank.

"Lena, we know this is a bit far-fetched. You really don't have any motive for committing a crime, but your unusual answers seem strange and abrupt among all the confessions. We know it wasn't you, but you know too many details, so we can't be careless." The police pulled me to the table, pressed me on the chair, sighed and said, "Come on, let's go over it from the beginning. Retell what happened that night again."
