Donna seemed to be crying on the other end of the phone, and although Alexander looked unhappy, he still patiently comforted her. This scene reminded me of this day last year - our sixth anniversary together.
That day, I prepared a table of food and waited for him to come home happily. However, he did not come back all night, and I could not contact him through my phone or WeChat. Just when I was anxiously preparing to call the police, Donna called me.
"Brother Alexander said that he turned off his phone to prevent the fish from being spooked while fishing," she explained in a tearful voice.
My voice was already hoarse: "Let Amo answer the phone!" I don't know which word touched Donna's sensitive nerves. She held the phone and cried while apologizing to me: "It's all my fault, Sister Laura. It's because I was in a bad mood recently. Brother Alexander couldn't spend the anniversary with sister because he was with me."
The man on the other end of the phone gently coaxed Donna. When Donna finished crying, I heard the rustling of clothes. The man's voice soon reached my ears: "Laura, are you sick? What did Donna do wrong that you are so mean to her?"
I choked up and asked, "Do you remember what day it was yesterday?" I didn't expect his answer so I continued, "When we were together, you promised me that you would spend future anniversaries with me!"
Then I heard Donna 's sobbing voice again : "Sister Laura , I really know I was wrong. Can you two stop arguing because of me? Donna will never call Brother Alexander again."
It was at this time that I received a conversation between Donna and Alexander on my phone.
"Brother Alexander, are you free to go fishing with me tomorrow?"
"It just so happens that tomorrow is Laura and I's anniversary."
"I don't know why girls have so many festivals to celebrate. It's really troublesome to go through them every year!"
The man's slightly disgusted tone let me know that he doesn't like me that much now. As for why he didn't break up with me, it might be because the sunk cost of seven years is too high and I, a dog, can take care of his life.
Now I think that his attitude towards me was very perfunctory during that period. I planned to propose to him on our sixth anniversary because I was afraid of losing him! Unfortunately, the ring I carefully hid in the cake was all my wishful thinking. I underestimated his desire to break up with me and overestimated our feelings.
That was the first time that I felt that we could not see our future. We walked into the hot pot restaurant in silence. But at this moment, Donna followed in with a delicate little gift box.
"Happy 7th anniversary to brother Alexander and sister Laura!" she said. "I ruined your anniversary last year so I prepared a gift for you today."
After saying that, Donna sat down next to Alexander without any hesitation.
"Donna, sit on the other side!" I said coldly, "We are all grown up now. You need to have some sense of boundaries."
