A year later, I lost my life to the pain of childbirth the night Alex Smith returned with his new girlfriend.

Since fate has given me a chance to be reborn, then they should prepare for the coming storm.

Early in the morning, I greeted the dawn and set out for the river, the source of life for the village.

The garbage and animal remains along the way gave me some ideas.

When I returned, Alex Smith was extremely anxious and looking for me everywhere in sweat.

"Where have you been? I thought something happened to you and almost mobilized the whole village to look for you."

In the past, such anxiety would move me and I would think it was a manifestation of his deep love.

But now, his love is like garbage to me, and so is he.

I explained lightly that I was just going to the mountains to enjoy the fresh air.

" Mom should have prepared breakfast, let's go back."

Back at the Smith family, May Brown was standing at the door with a big pig's trotter in her hand. The pregnant woman seemed to have a particularly good appetite.

I responded with a smile.

Everyone asked me about my situation. I pursed my lips, looked at Alex Smith, and spoke awkwardly after a long while.

"Um...sister-in-law, Alex Smith said you didn't look well, and suggested that you go to the hospital for a prenatal check-up and get an ultrasound to see the baby's gender. He was embarrassed to mention it, so he insisted that I tell you this."

After that, I deliberately mumbled a few words, with the voice just right for everyone to hear.

The gist of it was that the baby was too young this month, and it might take a few more ultrasounds to see the gender, and prenatal checkups might have to be done more than a dozen times until delivery.

Before his mother could speak, May Brown was the first to object.

"I'm not going!"

Her raised voice startled everyone.

May Brown blushed and explained that prenatal check-ups cost a lot of money and it was not easy for David Smith to make money.

"Alex Smith, I know you mean well. But when I was pregnant with you two brothers, I didn't go to the hospital once, and I often worked in the fields. Aren't you healthy? I know your sister-in-law's health. She looks bad because the baby was noisy at night, she didn't sleep well, and she was hungry."

"Wow! Auntie, you worked in the fields when you were pregnant? Your physical fitness is amazing! And you cook so deliciously, and you can raise two such outstanding sons..."
