After a long sleep, I finally woke up. There was someone sitting quietly beside the bed. I turned my head with great effort, but it was not Serena I expected.
Chloe, the child adopted by my parents, was studying my medical records carefully. She looked serious and old-fashioned under her gold-rimmed glasses. She felt my gaze, raised her head, and met my eyes.
"Andrew, how do you feel now?" she asked with concern.
I shook my head. "It's nothing serious, just a little dizzy. Why are you here?" We haven't seen each other for seven years, ever since my parents had the accident.
She adjusted her glasses, her tone revealing a hint of dissatisfaction: "If I don't show up, I won't even know you're dead."
" Serena went to find someone else after your condition stabilized. Is this the true love you always talked about?" There was sarcasm in her words.
"We're over." I replied calmly, having completely given up on Serena.
Chloe's voice was a little choked up: "Brother, if I hadn't come back, you might be alone now. I can't bear to see her treat you like this. She even called you a liar in front of me, saying that you only rely on your body to gain sympathy."
These words pierced my heart like needles, and even though they came from Chloe's mouth, it still made it difficult for me to calm down.
I lowered my eyes and tried to keep my tone steady: "Why mention her? Just ignore her."
At this moment, Serena called. Her tone was bad, and she asked angrily: "Andrew, you are really better than anyone else at pretending to be dead. Even I was fooled by you. Did you resign on purpose to make things difficult for Lucas in the company?"
Chloe listened to all of this, and when she saw that I didn't refute a word, she finally couldn't help but snatch the phone away: "What are you yelling about? Do you think what you did is glorious? Lucas is just a mistress! Isn't it your own fault? Isn't it normal that he can't do a good job after being parachuted into this position?"
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment, and then Serena 's voice came: " Andrew , how long have I been gone, and you already have another woman by your side?"
Chloe pouted and hung up the phone directly. I was a little helpless: "Why get angry with her, there's no need."
"That's why she always bullies you!" Chloe said angrily.
I was speechless for a moment, and slowly stood up to go through the discharge procedures. Because I don't belong to this world, the hospital can't check my physical condition. Instead of wasting time in the hospital, it's better to go home early.
Chloe followed me stubbornly and went home together. This so-called home was actually an apartment I bought in my early years. It had never been occupied and seemed particularly deserted.
However, the moment I opened the door, I saw Serena . She was sitting on the sofa, her eyes tired. There was a bouquet of flowers and a box of new rings on the table. She came up to me eagerly: " Andrew ! Why did you come back just now?"
Then , she saw Chloe behind me , her face darkened: "Who is she?"
"Is this the person who answered your call?" I avoided her questioning and turned back to delete her fingerprint on the password lock.
"What does it have to do with you who she is? We have no relationship anymore." I replied coldly.
Chloe glanced at her and didn't join in the fight between us, but went straight to the study with the book.
Serena pulled me to sit down, tears in her eyes: "Andrew, I was wrong."
I was stunned, thinking she was going to say something to apologize. However, she wiped her tears and choked up and said, "I shouldn't have kicked you out of the company. Lucas failed in his job... Can you help him? He is young and couldn't bear such a big blow. He almost committed suicide."
It seems that I was wrong. She came here for another man. I thought to myself with self-mockery that just now, I actually thought she came here for that phone call.
I pinched my brows, feeling exhausted: "Serena, why are you always so whimsical? Why should I help him for you?"
She looked a little confused, as if she was puzzled by my refusal. Finally, she continued, "You are not going to work anyway, so no one will say anything if you take all the responsibilities on yourself. Besides, if you were willing to stay, maybe this mistake would not have happened at all."
She was going to let me bear the blame and the omissions. I understood her unspoken intention, but I still wanted to ask: Why?
Just when I was about to refuse, Chloe suddenly rushed out of the room: "Do you have any shame? You asked your ex to clean up your current one. I am embarrassed to hear you say that! Get out of here now. People like you are cold-blooded, selfish and ruthless. You don't deserve my brother's love at all!"
Serena was a little embarrassed by these words. She stood up, her brows gloomy: "Andrew, are you just going to let her scold me like this?"
I stared at her for a long time and said word by word, "Serena, she is telling the truth."
