Ik viel in slaap in Nicholas armen. Het was het warmste, meest comfortabele waarin ik me ooit had gevoeld, ik kan me niet herinneren hoe lang. Met de zon die door de jaloezieën naar binnen kroop en het geluid van de oceaan die op het zand net buiten het raam sloeg, werd ik in slaap gesust als een blije baby in een wieg.

Toen ik later wakker knipperde, stond de zon veel lager aan de hemel en was Nicholas weg. Ik was niet verrast door zijn afwezigheid, maar ik miste hem wel meteen. Het bed was zoveel kouder met hem, en zonder de zon.

Ik wilde niet meer slapen, alleen. Het hielp dat ik ook helemaal uitgerust was.
